Rotation 2 Question 5

5. A bob of mass $m$ attached to an inextensible string of length $l$ is suspended from a vertical support. The bob rotates in a horizontal circle with an angular speed $\omega rad / s$ about the vertical support. About the point of suspension

(2014 Main)

(a) angular momentum is conserved

(b) angular momentum changes in magnitude but not in direction

(c) angular momentum changes in direction but not in magnitude

(d) angular momentum changes both in direction and magnitude

Show Answer

Answer:

Correct Answer: 5. (c)

Solution:

  1. Angular momentum of the pendulum about the suspension point $O$ is

Then, $v$ can be resolved into two components, radial component $r _{\text {rad }}$ and tangential component $r _{\text {tan }}$. Due to $v _{\text {rad }}, L$ will be tangential and due to $v _{\tan }, L$ will be radially outwards as shown. So, net angular momentum will be as shown in figure whose magnitude will be constant $(|L|=m v l)$. But its direction will change as shown in the figure.

$$ \mathbf{L}=m(\mathbf{r} \times \mathbf{v}) $$

where, $r=$ radius of circle.
