Modern Physics 5 Question 9

9. If a star can convert all the He nuclei completely into oxygen nuclei. The energy released per oxygen nuclei is : (Mass of the helium nucleus is $4.0026 amu$ and mass of oxygen nucleus is $15.9994 amu$ )

$(2005,2 M)$

(a) $7.6 MeV$

(b) $56.12 MeV$

(c) $10.24 MeV$

(d) $23.4 MeV$

Show Answer

Answer:

Correct Answer: 9. (a)

Solution:

  1. $4\left({ } _2 He^{4}\right)={ } _8 O^{16}$

Mass defect, $\Delta m={4(4.0026)-15.9994}=0.011 amu$

$\therefore$ Energy released per oxygen nuclei

$$ =(0.011)(931.48) MeV=10.24 MeV $$
