Modern Physics 4 Question 23

24. The potential difference applied to an X-ray tube is increased. As a result, in the emitted radiation

$(1988,2 M)$

(a) the intensity increases

(b) the minimum wavelength increases

(c) the intensity remains unchanged

(d) the minimum wavelength decreases

Solution:

  1. $\lambda _m($ in $\AA)=\frac{12375}{V \text { (in volt })}$

With increase in $V, \lambda _m$ will decrease. With decrease in $\lambda _m$ energy of emitted photons will increase. And hence intensity will increase even if number of photons emitted per second are constant. Because intensity is basically energy per unit area per unit time.
