23. In an insulated vessel, 0.05kg steam at 373K and 0.45kg of ice at 253K are mixed. Find the final temperature of the mixture (in kelvin).

 Given, Lfusion =80cal/g=336J/g,Lvaporisation =540cal/g=2268J/g,Sice =2100J/kg,K=0.5cal/gK and Swater =4200J/kg,K=1cal/gK.

Solution:

  1. 0.05kg steam at 373KQ10.05kg water at 373K 0.05kg water at 373KQ20.05kg water at 273K 0.45kg ice at 253KQ30.45kg ice at 273K

0.45kg ice at 273KQ40.45kg water at 273K

Q1=(50)(540)=27000cal=27kcal

Q2=(50)(1)(100)=5000cal=5kcal

Q3=(450)(0.5)(20)=4500cal=4.5kcal

Q4=(450)(80)=36000cal=36kcal

Now, since Q1+Q2>Q3 but Q1+Q2<Q3+Q4 ice will come to 273K from 253K, but whole ice will not melt. Therefore, temperature of the mixture is 273K.
