Electrostatics 3 Question 19

19. Three concentric spherical metallic shells, A,B and C of radii a,b and c(a<b<c) have surface charge densities σ,σ and σ respectively.

(1990, 7M)

(a) Find the potential of the three shells A,B and C.

(b) If the shells A and C are at the same potential, obtain the relation between the radii a,b and c.

Answer:

Correct Answer: 19. (a)VA=σε0(ab+c),VB=σε0(a2bb+c), VC=σε0(a2cb2c+c)  (b) a+b=c

Solution:

  1. (a) Potential at any shell will be due to all three charges.

VA=14πε0qAa+qBb+qCc=14πε0(4πa2)(σ)a+(4πb2)(σ)b+(4πc2)(σ)c=σε0(ab+c)VB=14πε0qAb+qBb+qCc=14πε0(4πa2)(σ)b+(4πb2)(σ)b+(4πc2)(σ)c=σε0a2bb+c

Similarly, VC=14πε0qAc+qBc+qCc

=14πε0(4πa2)(σ)c+(4πb2)(σ)c+(4πc2)(σ)c=σε0a2cb2c+c

(b) Given VA=VC

σε0(ab+c)=σε0a2cb2c+cab+c=a2cb2c+c or a+b=c
