Electromagnetic Induction and Alternating Current 1 Question 16

16. Three identical closed coils $A, B$ and $C$ are placed with their planes parallel to one another. Coils $A$ and $C$ carry equal currents

as shown in figure. Coils $B$ and $C$ are fixed in position and coil $A$ is moved towards $B$ with uniform motion. Is there any induced current in $B$ ? If no, give reasons. If yes, mark the direction of the induced current in the diagram.

Answer:

Correct Answer: 16. Yes, in the direction opposite to $A$.

Solution:

  1. Due to the current in $A$, a magnetic field is from right to left. When $A$ is moved towards $B$, magnetic lines passing through $B$ (from right to left) will increase, i.e. magnetic flux passing through $B$ will increase. Therefore, current will be induced in $B$. The induced current will have such a direction that it gives a magnetic field opposite to that, passing through $B$ due to current in $A$. Therefore, induced current in $B$ will be in opposite direction of current in $A$.
