Solution:

$S^{2 -} + C u C l_{2} ⟶ C u S ↓$ (black ppt.)

$S O_{4}^{2 -} + C u C l_{2} ⟶ Soluble, Thus$

(a) $C u C l_{2}$ selectively precipitates $S^{2 -}$ .

(b) $S^{2 -} + B a C l_{2} ⟶ B a S ↓$ (soluble)

$S O_{4}^{2 -} + B a C l_{2} ⟶ B a S O_{4} ↓ (white ppt.)$

(b) precipitates $S O_{4}^{2 -}$ and not $S^{2 -}$ .

$S O_{4}^{2 -} + P b^{2 +} ⟶ P b S O_{4} ↓$ (white ppt.)

$S^{2 -}$ and $S O_{4}^{2 -}$ , both are precipitated.

But no colour with $S O_{4}^{2 -}$ .
