  1. Only assertion is correct and reason is incorrect. Haematite is not a carbonate ore. It is an oxide ore, i.e. $Fe _2 O _3$. Cast iron is extracted chiefly from its oxide ore (haematite) by heating in the presence of coke and limestone in a blast furnace.
