Carboxylic Acids and their Derivatives - Result Question 17

####3. The compound that does not liberate $CO _2$, on treatment with aqueous sodium bicarbonate solution, is

(2013 Adv.)

(a) benzoic acid

(b) benzenesulphonic acid

(c) salicylic acid

(d) carbolic acid (Phenol)

Show Answer

Answer:

Correct Answer: 3. (c)

Solution:

  1. PLAN $NaHCO _3 \rightleftharpoons Na^{+}+HCO _3^{-}$

$HCO _3^{-}$is decomposed by acid releasing $CO _2$

$HCO _3^{-}+H^{+} \longrightarrow H _2 O+CO _2$

If acid is stronger than $HCO _3^{-}$then $CO _2$ is released. Phenol is less acidic and thus does not liberate $CO _2$ with $NaHCO _3$.
