####52. Answer the following with suitable equation wherever necessary

(i) How can you prepare benzene from lime?

(ii) How will you convert toluene to $m$ -nitrobenzoic acid?

Solution:

(i) Lime is heated with coke at high temperature and then, hydrolysed to form acetylene. This acetylene on passing red hot tube polymerises to form benzene :

$\underset{Lime}{C a O} + \underset{Coke}{3 C} \overset{2000^{\circ} C}{\to} C a C_{2} + C O ↑$

$\begin{matrix} C a C_{2} + 2 H_{2} O ⟶ C a (O H)_{2} + \underset{Acetylene}{C_{2} H_{2}} 3 C_{2} H_{2} \to_{Δ}^{C u} \underset{Benzene}{C_{6} H_{6}} \end{matrix}$

(ii) $- C H_{3}$ in toluene is ortho/para directing group, first oxidised to $- C O O H$ in order to make it meta directing and then nitrated.
