35. A large glass slab $μ = \frac{5}{3}$ of thickness $8 c m$ is placed over a point source of light on a plane surface. It is seen that light emerges out of the top surface of the slab from a circular area of radius $R c m$ . What is the value of $R$ ?

Solution:

$\frac{R}{t} = \tan θ_{C}$ or $R = t (\tan θ_{C})$

$\begin{array}{ll} But, & \sin θ_{C} = \frac{1}{μ} = \frac{3}{5} \\ ∴ & \tan θ_{C} = \frac{3}{4} \\ ∴ R = \frac{3}{4} t = \frac{3}{4} (8 c m) = 6 c m \end{array}$

Hence the answer is 6 .
