Solution:

$\begin{aligned} I & = I_{max} \cos^{2} \frac{φ}{2} \\ ∴ \frac{I_{max}}{4} & = I_{max} \cos^{2} \frac{φ}{2} \\ \cos \frac{φ}{2} & = \frac{1}{2} \end{aligned}$

$\begin{aligned} or \frac{φ}{2} = \frac{π}{3} \\ ∴ φ = \frac{2 π}{3} = \frac{2 π}{λ} Δ x \\ where Δ x = d \sin θ \end{aligned}$

Substituting in Eq. (i), we get

$\sin θ = \frac{λ}{3 d} or θ = \sin^{- 1} \frac{λ}{3 d}$
