Optics 3 Question 12

12. A thin convex lens made from crown glass (μ=3/2) has focal length f. When it is measured in two different liquids having refractive indices 4/3 and 5/3. It has the focal lengths f1 and f2, respectively. The correct relation between the focal length is

(2014 Main)

(a) f1=f2<f

(b) f1>f and f2 becomes negative

(c) f2>f and f1 becomes negative

(d) f1 and f2 both become negative

Show Answer

Answer:

Correct Answer: 12. (b)

Solution:

  1. It is based on lens maker’s formula and its magnification.

 i.e. 1f=(μ1)1R11R2

According to lens maker’s formula, when the lens in the air

1f=3211R11R21f=12xf=2x

 Here, 1x=1R11R2

In case of liquid, where refractive index is 43 and 53, we get

Focal length in first liquid

1f1=μsμl111R11R21f1=324311x

f1 is positive.

1f1=18x=14(2x)=14ff1=4f

Focal length in second liquid

1f2=μsμl211R11R2

1f2=325311x

f2 is negative.
