Modern Physics 1 Question 11

8. In a hydrogen like atom, when an electron jumps from the M-shell to the L-shell, the wavelength of emitted radiation is λ. If an electron jumps from N-shell to the L-shell, the wavelength of emitted radiation will be (Main 2019, 11 Jan II)

(a) 2720λ

(b) 2516λ

(c) 2027λ

(d) 1625λ

Show Answer

Solution:

  1. For hydrogen or hydrogen like atoms, we know that

1λ=RZ21n121n22

where, R is Rydberg constant and Z is atomic number. When electron jumps from M - shell to the L - shell, then

Eq (i) becomes

n1=2n2=3

(for L - shell)

(for M - shell)

1λ=RZ2122132=536RZ2]

Now, electron jumps from N-shell to the L - shell, for this

n1=2 (for L shell) n2=4 (for N shell)

Eq. (i) becomes

1λ=RZ2122142=316RZ2

Now, we divide Eq (ii) by Eq (iii)

λλ=536RZ2÷316RZ2=2027 or λ=2027λ
