Heat and Thermodynamics 3 Question 8
8. Two rectangular blocks, having indentical dimensions, can be arranged either in configuration I or in configuration II as shown in the figure. One of the blocks has thermal conductivity $K$ and the other $2 K$.
The temperature difference between the ends along the $X$-axis is the same in both the configurations. It takes $9 s$ to transport a certain amount of heat from the hot end to the cold end in the configuration I. The time to transport the same amount of heat in the configuration II is
(2013 Adv.) Configuration II
(a) $2.0 s$
(b) $3.0 s$
(c) $4.5 s$
(d) $6.0 s$
Show Answer
Solution:
- $R _I=R _1+R _2=\left(\frac{l}{K A}\right)+\left(\frac{l}{2 K A}\right)=\frac{3}{2}\left(\frac{l}{K A}\right)$
$$ \begin{aligned} \frac{1}{R _{II}} & =\frac{1}{R _1}+\frac{1}{R _2}=\frac{K A}{l}+\frac{2 K A}{l} \\ \text { or } \quad R _{II} & =\frac{l}{3 K A}=\frac{R _I}{4.5} \end{aligned} $$
Since thermal resistance $R _{II}$ is 4.5 times less than thermal resistance $R _I$.
$$ \therefore \quad t _{II}=\frac{t _I}{4.5}=\frac{9}{4.5} s=2 s $$
