Heat and Thermodynamics 1 Question 16
16. Steam at $100^{\circ} C$ is passed into $1.1 kg$ of water contained in a calorimeter of water equivalent $0.02 kg$ at $15^{\circ} C$ till the temperature of the calorimeter and its contents rises to $80^{\circ} C$. The mass of the steam condensed in $kg$ is
(1986, 2M)
(a) 0.130
(b) 0.065
(c) 0.260
(d) 0.135
Show Answer
Solution:
- Heat required $Q _1=(1.1+0.02) \times 10^{3} \times 1 \times(80-15)$ $=72800 cal$
Heat given it $m$ (in $kg$ ) steam is condensed :
$Q _2=\left(m \times 540 \times 10^{3}\right)+m \times 1 \times 10^{3} \times(100-80)$
Equating $Q _1=Q _2$, we get
$$ m=0.130 kg $$
