21. The abscissae of the two points A and B are the roots of the equation x2+2axb2=0 and their ordinates are the roots of the equation y2+2pyq2=0. Find the equation and the radius of the circle with AB as diameter.

Solution:

  1. Let (x1,y1) and (x2,y2) be the coordinates of points A and B, respectively.

It is given that x1,x2 are the roots of x2+2axb2=0 x1+x2=2a and x1x2=b2

Also, y1 and y2 are the roots of y2+2pyq2=0

y1+y2=2p and y1y2=q2

The equation of circle with AB as diameter is,

(xx1)(xx2)+(yy1)(yy2)=0

x2+y2(x1+x2)x(y1+y2)y+(x1x2+y1y2)=0

x2+y2+2ax+2py(b2+q2)=0

and radius =a2+p2+b2+q2
