Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry - Result Question 47

####47. 8.0575×102kg of Glauber’s salt is dissolved in water to obtain 1dm3 of solution of density 1077.2kgm3. Calculate the molality, molarity and mole fraction of Na2SO4 in solution.

(1994, 3M)

Show Answer

Solution:

  1. Molar mass of Glauber’s salt (Na2SO410H2O)

=23×2+32+64+10×18=322g

Mole of Na2SO410H2O in 1.0L solution =80.575322=0.25

Molarity of solution =0.25M

Also, weight of 1.0L solution =1077.2g

weight of Na2SO4 in 1.0L solution =0.25×142=35.5g

Weight of water in 1.0L solution =1077.235.5=1041.7g

Molality =0.251041.7×1000=0.24m

Mole fraction of Na2SO4= Mole of Na2SO4 Mole of Na2SO4+ Mole of water

=0.250.25+1041.718 =4.3×103.
