Extraction of Metals - Result Question 23

####23. In the cyanide extraction process of silver from argentite ore, the oxidising and reducing agents used are

(2012)

(a) O2 and CO respectively

(b) O2 and Zn dust respectively

(c) HNO3 and Zn dust respectively

(d) HNO3 and CO respectively

Show Answer

Solution:

  1. The reactions involved in extraction of silver by cyanide process are

Ag2S+CN+O2[Ag(CN)2]+SO2 [Ag(CN)2]+Zn[Zn(CN)4]2+Ag

In reaction (i), sulphide is oxidised to SO2 by oxygen. In the reaction (ii), silver ion (Ag+)is reduced to Ag by Zn. Therefore, O2 is oxidising agent and Zn is reducing agent.
