Chemical and Ionic Equilibrium - Result Question 51
####51. At a certain temperature, equilibrium constant $\left(K _c\right)$ is 16 for the reaction;
$$ SO _2(g)+NO _2(g) \rightleftharpoons SO _3(g)+NO(g) $$
If we take one mole each of all the four gases in a one litre container, what would be the equilibrium concentrations of $NO$ and $NO _2$ ?
$(1987,5 M)$
Show Answer
Solution:
- $\underset{1-x}{SO _2}(g)+\underset{1-x}{NO _2}(g) \rightleftharpoons \underset{x}{SO _3}(g)+\underset{x}{NO}(g)$
$Q _c=1<K _c$, i.e. reaction proceed in forward direction to attain equilibrium.
$$ 16=\left(\frac{x}{1-x}\right)^{2} \Rightarrow x=0.80 $$
$[NO]=0.80 M,\left[NO _2\right]=0.20 M$
