Chemical and Ionic Equilibrium - Result Question 11

####11. An aqueous solution contains 0.10MH2S and 0.20MHCl. If the equilibrium constants for the formation of HSfrom H2S is 1.0×107 and that of S2 from HSions is 1.2×1013 then the concentration of S2 ions in aqueous solution is :

(a) 5×108

(b) 3×1020

(c) 6×1021

(d) 5×1019

Show Answer

Solution:

  1. Given [H2S]=0.10M

[HCl]=0.20MSo,[H+]=0.20M

H2SH++HS,K1=1.0×107

HSH++S2,K2=1.2×1013

It means for,

H2S2H++S2 K=K1×K2=1.0×107×1.2×1013 =1.2×1020 ρ2]=K×[H2S][H+]2 [according to the final  =1.2×1020×0.1M(0.2M)2 =1.2×1020×1×101M4×102M =3×1020M

Now [S2]=K×[H2S][H+]2 [according to the final equation]
