Carboxylic Acids and their Derivatives - Result Question 35
####22. The reactions, $Q$ to $R$ and $R$ to $S$, are
(a) Aromatic sulfonation and Friedel-Crafts acylation
(b) Friedel-Crafts alkylation and Friedel-Crafts acylation
(c) Friedel-Crafts alkylation, dehydration and Friedel-Crafts acylation
(d) Dehydration and Friedel-Crafts acylation
Passage 2
$P$ and $Q$ are isomers of dicarboxylic acid $C _4 H _4 O _4$. Both decolourize $Br _2 / H _2 O$. On heating, $P$ forms the cyclic anhydride.
Upon treatment with dilute alkaline $KMnO _4 \cdot P$ as well as $Q$ could produce one or more than one form $S, T$ and $U$.
