Solution:

  1. When α-particle stop at 1013m from nucleus, kinetic energy is zero, i.e. whole of its kinetic energy at the starting point is now converted into potential energy.

Potential energy of this α-particle can be determined as

PE=Z1×Z2e2(4πε0)r (Z1=+2,Z2=+29,ε0=8.85×1012J1C2m1 r=1013m) |PE|=2×29×(1.6×1019)24×3.14×8.85×1012×1013J =1.33×1013J = kinetic energy of α-particle at t=0 KE=12mv2=1.33×1013 v=2×1.33×10134×1.66×1027=6.3×106ms1
