Aliphatic Compounds Containing Nitrogen - Result Question 16

####17. Considering the basic strength of amines in aqueous solution, which one has the smallest pKb value?

(2014 Main)

(a) (CH3)2NH

(b) CH3NH2

(c) (CH3)3N

(d) C6H5NH2

Show Answer

Answer:

Correct Answer: 17. (a)

Solution:

  1. This problem can be solved by using the concept of effect of steric hindrance, hydration and H-bonding in basic strength of amines. Order of basic strength of aliphatic amine in aqueous solution is as follows (order of Kb )

(CH3)2N¨H>CH3N¨H2>(CH3)3N¨>C6H5N¨H2

As we know, pKb=logKb

So, (CH3)2N¨H will have smallest pKb value. In case of phenyl amine, N is attached to sp2-hybridised carbon, hence it has highest pKb and least basic strength.
