Alcohols and Ethers - Result Question 50

####55. Compound X (molecular formula, C5H8O ) does not react appreciably with Lucas reagent at room temperature but gives a precipitate with ammoniacal silver nitrate with excess of MeMgBr,0.42g of X gives 224mL of CH4 at STP. Treatment of X with H2 in presence of Pt catalyst followed by boiling with excess HI, gives n-pentane. Suggest structure for X and write the equation involved.

Show Answer

Solution:

  1. Compound ’ X ’ Lucas reagent No reaction at room temperature.

C5H8OAgNO3 Ammoniacal  ppt, XCH3MgBr Excess of CH4;

X HI excess H2/Ptn-pentane

Above information suggest that X has a terminal triple bond and it contain primary OH group.

HCCCH2CH2CH2OHXAg(NH3)2+ AgCCCH2CH2CH2OH
