Question: Q. 6. What is the value of the angle between the vectors $\vec{p}$ and $\vec{E}$ for which the potential energy of an electric dipole of dipole moment $p$, kept in an external electric field $\vec{E}_{2}$ has the maximum value.

Solution:
Ans. P.E. $=-\vec{p} \cdot \vec{E}=-p E \cos \theta$
$\therefore$ P.E. is the maximum when $\cos \theta=-1$,
i.e., $\theta=\pi\left(=180^{\circ}\right)$.
$1 / 2$
