[b] Let $A_{0}$ and At be the areas of cross-section of the tube at temperature 0 and t respectively, 1 = length of the liquid column (constant) $V_{0}$ and $V_{t}$ be the volumes of the liquid at temperature 0 and t respectively, $V_{0} = ℓ A_{0} V_{t} = ℓ A_{t}$

$V_{t} = V_{0} (l + γ t) A_{t} = A_{0} (l + 2 α t)$

$∴ V_{t} = ℓ A_{0} (l + 2 α t) = V_{0} (l + γ t)$

$= ℓ A_{0} (l + γ t) o r γ = 2 a .$
