Another Zika Virus Case Detected in Pune

On Friday, Pune reported another Zika virus case, bringing the total number of cases in the city to four. A 22-year-old man tested positive for the virus, prompting the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to increase its monitoring efforts.

The PMC’s health department had already sent a letter to private doctors on Thursday, urging them to report any cases of vector-borne diseases to the civic authorities. This request was also extended to private laboratories and diagnostic centers.

Earlier in the week, a doctor and his 15-year-old daughter were confirmed to have the Zika virus. A third case was initially suspected but later tested negative. The PMC has been conducting special drives and surveillance in specific areas to eliminate mosquito breeding sites.

The 22-year-old man who tested positive on Friday is from Mundhwa and is the son of a woman who was initially suspected of having Zika. She had tested positive at a private lab but later tested negative when the National Institute of Virology (NIV) collected a sample. As part of the surveillance, 13 samples were collected from the family and neighbors, with one testing positive. PMC health officials noted that the young man showed no symptoms. Given that his mother was a suspected case who tested positive in early June, the total number of Zika cases in Pune now stands at four.
