Mona Ghosh: Indian American Doctor Admits to Healthcare Fraud, Could Face Up to 10 Years in Jail
Mona Ghosh, a 51-year-old doctor from the Chicago area, has admitted to committing healthcare fraud by charging Medicaid and private insurance companies for services that were never provided.
Dr. Ghosh, who runs Progressive Women’s Healthcare, a clinic specializing in obstetrics and gynecology, has pleaded guilty to two charges of healthcare fraud.
Each charge could result in a prison sentence of up to ten years.
Sentencing Scheduled for October 22
U.S. District Judge Franklin U. Valderrama has scheduled her sentencing for October 22.
Federal prosecutors claim that Dr. Ghosh is responsible for at least $2.4 million in fraudulent reimbursements.
In her plea agreement, she admitted to being responsible for over $1.5 million of these fraudulent claims.
The exact amount will be decided by the court during sentencing, according to a media release.
Court documents reveal that between 2018 and 2022, Dr. Ghosh and her employees submitted false claims to Medicaid, TRICARE, and other insurance companies for procedures and services that were either not performed or not medically necessary. Some of these procedures were done without the patients’ consent.
Dr. Ghosh also exaggerated the length and complexity of both in-office and telemedicine visits. She used billing codes that did not match the actual services provided to get higher reimbursement rates, as stated in her plea agreement.
She also admitted to creating fake patient medical records to support these fraudulent claims.
