How Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s Decision Led to T20 World Cup 2024 Triumph: Report Reveals Key Details

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli concluded their T20I careers on a high note as India secured the T20 World Cup 2024 title by defeating South Africa in the final match. Rohit set an example as the captain of the Indian cricket team, delivering several crucial performances throughout the tournament. Meanwhile, Kohli reserved his best for the final, scoring a determined half-century. After the victory, both players announced their retirements from T20Is, leaving a lasting legacy in Indian cricket history. However, just a year earlier, there were uncertainties about whether these two star players would continue in the shortest format of the game. According to a report, early decisions regarding Virat and Rohit’s future with the team played a significant role in India’s success in the T20 World Cup 2024.

The Indian Express reported that the BCCI selectors chose to retain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for the T20 World Cup despite facing criticism from some experts and fans.

After the ODI World Cup 2023, both Virat and Rohit missed several T20I series, with Hardik Pandya stepping in as captain. There were discussions about Hardik taking on the role permanently. However, chief selector Ajit Agarkar decided to have a conversation with Rohit Sharma.

“Rohit agreed immediately. He felt he could give one last effort in the T20 format. Given his current batting form, he believed he could push through one more season,” a BCCI official told The Indian Express.

A similar discussion took place with Virat, who emerged as the top run-scorer in the IPL 2024. With not many in-form top-order batters available, the star player also agreed to participate in the World Cup.

Around this time, Hardik confirmed that he would be bowling during the T20 World Cup 2024 after recovering from his injury. “With these three crucial elements in place, the picture became clear. We just needed to formulate a plan,” said a selector.
