Delhi Court Allows Engineer Rashid to Take Oath as MP

On Tuesday, a Delhi Court granted custody parole to Engineer Rashid, who won against former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, so he could take his oath as a Member of Parliament.

The decision was made by Additional Sessions Judge Chander Jit Singh of Patiala House Courts after the National Investigation Agency (NIA) agreed to let Rashid take his oath on July 5.

Although the NIA did not oppose Rashid’s temporary bail request, they insisted on certain restrictions. Rashid is not allowed to speak to or interact with the media.

The court specified that during his custody parole, Rashid cannot use any phone and is only allowed to communicate with authorities.

The court also stated that Rashid is prohibited from speaking to the media. While his family members can be present, he is not allowed to take photographs of the ceremony or share them on social media.

According to the court’s order, Rashid will also be denied access to the internet.

Rashid won the Baramulla Lok Sabha seat by a margin of over two lakh votes.

Rashid has been in jail since 2019 after being charged by the NIA under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in a suspected terror funding case. He is currently held in Tihar jail.
