Total Internal Reflectionray Optics And Optical Instruments

Concepts to remember on Total Internal Reflection:

  • Total internal reflection (TIR): Occurs when light moves from denser to rarer medium at an angle greater than the critical angle.
  • Critical angle: Minimum angle of incidence for TIR to happen.
  • TIR is reversible: If light undergoes TIR at an interface, it’ll do the same moving rarer to denser medium at the same angle of incidence.
  • Applications of TIR: Optical fibers (low transmission loss), prisms (dispersion of light), mirrors (perfect reflection).
