Let rA is the distance of point A from point charge Q and rB is the distance of point B from point charge Q.

Potential at point A :

V(rA)=14πε0QrA

Potential at point B :

V(rB)=14πε0QrB

Since rA<rB, so when :

charge Q is positive; VA>VB

charge Q is negative; VA<VB
