alternating-currents Question 35

Question: Q. 1. Mention the two characteristic properties of the material suitable for making core of a transformer. R [O.D. I, II, III 2012]

Show Answer

Solution:

Ans. Any two of the following:

(i) Low coercivity / Low retentivity

(ii) Low hysteresis loss

OR

(i) High magnetic susceptibility / High Permeability

(ii) High resistivity [AI Q. 2. Why is the core of a transformer laminated ?

R [Delhi Comptt. I 2013]

Ans. To reduce the iron loss, the iron core of a transformer is laminated.

[CBSE Marking Scheme 2013]

Detailed Answer :

The main purpose of transformer core is to transfer the flux from primary winding to secondary winding. During the transfer of flux, there results some leakage of flux which causes the eddy current to flow in transformer core. In order to minimise the eddy current, transformer core is laminated that will help in increasing the resistance with decrease in area of cross section.
