What is the male population above poverty line for State $P$ if the female population below poverty line for State P is 2.1 million?

(1) 2.1 million

(2) 2.7 million

(3) 3.3 million

(4) 2.3 million

(5) 3 million

Correct Answer: (3)

Solution: (3)

Total population of state $P =$ $x$ millions

$∴$ Population below poverty line $= \frac{35 x}{100}$

Female population $= \frac{6}{11} \times \frac{35 x}{100}$

$∴ \frac{6 \times 35 x}{1100} = 2.1$

$\Rightarrow 6 \times 35 x = 2.1 \times 1100$

$\Rightarrow x = \frac{2.1 \times 1100}{35 \times 6}$ $= 11$ millions

$∴$ Population above poverty line $= \frac{11 \times 65}{100}$ millions

$∴$ Male population $= \frac{11 \times 65}{100} \times \frac{6}{13} = 3.3$ millions
