Components Of The Solar System
The solar system is a gravitationally bound system of the Sun, eight planets, dwarf planets, and many moons, asteroids, comets and meteoroids. It is located in the Milky Way galaxy.
The Sun

The Dwarf Planets
Dwarf planets are objects that are similar to planets but do not meet all of the criteria to be classified as a planet. There are five dwarf planets in the solar system:
- Ceres is the largest dwarf planet. It is located in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.
- Pluto is the second largest dwarf planet. It is located in the Kuiper Belt, a region beyond Neptune.
- Eris is the third largest dwarf planet. It is located in the scattered disc, a region beyond the Kuiper Belt.
- Haumea is the fourth largest dwarf planet. It is located in the Kuiper Belt.
- Makemake is the fifth largest dwarf planet. It is located in the Kuiper Belt.
The Moons
Moons are natural satellites that orbit planets. There are over 200 moons in the solar system. The largest moon is Jupiter’s moon Ganymede, which is larger than the planet Mercury.
The Asteroids
Asteroids are small, rocky objects that orbit the Sun. There are millions of asteroids in the solar system, most of which are located in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.
The Comets
Comets are icy objects that orbit the Sun. When a comet approaches the Sun, its ice vaporizes and forms a tail that points away from the Sun.
The Meteoroids

When a meteoroid enters the Earth’s atmosphere, it is heated by friction and glows. This is what we see as a meteor, or shooting star. If a meteoroid does not completely vaporize in the atmosphere, it will land on the Earth’s surface. This is called a meteorite.
