IIT Top Colleges Ranking
Overview of Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs)
The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are a prestigious group of public institutions for higher education in India. The journey of IITs began with the establishment of the first IIT in Kharagpur in 1951. As of now, the country boasts of a total of 23 IITs. These institutions are autonomous and are governed by the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961, which has declared them as “Institutions of National Importance”. IITs are recognized as the premier engineering colleges in India, and gaining admission into their B.Tech programme is highly competitive. In 2023, the total number of B.Tech seats across all the IITs was approximately 16,053. This means that less than 1% of all the students appearing for JEE Advanced secure admission into one of the IITs. According to the NIRF ranking 2023 for engineering, 8 IITs have secured their place in the top 10 engineering colleges in India.
