Optics Question 29

Question: Assertion : A beam of white light gives a spectrum on passing through a hollow prism. Reason : Speed of light outside the prism is different from the speed of light inside the prism.

Options:

A) If both assertion and reason are true and the reason is the correct explanation of the assertion.

B) If both assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation of the assertion.

C) If assertion is true but reason is false.

D) If the assertion and reason both are false.

E) If assertion is false but reason is true.

Show Answer

Answer:

Correct Answer: D

Solution:

Dispersion of light cannot occur on passing through air contained in a hollow prism.

Dispersion take place because the refractive index of medium for different colour is different.

Therefore when white light travels from air to air, refractive index remains same and no dispersion occurs.
