Shift Δx=βλ(μ1)t

Shift due to one plate Δx1=βλ(μ11)

Shift due to another path Δx2=βλ(μ21)t

Net shift Δx=Δx2Δx1=βλ(μ2μ1)t …(i)

Also it is given that Δx=5β …(ii)

Hence 5β=βλ(μ1μ2)t

t=5λ(μ2μ1)=5×4800×1010(1.71.4)

=8×106m=8μm.
