Solutions Question 257

Question: The cryoscopic constant for acetic acid is 3.6 K kg/mol. A solution of 1 g of a hydrocarbon in 100 g of acetic acid freezes at 16.14C instead of the usual 16.60C . The hydrocarbon contains 92.3% carbon. What is the’molecular formula-

Options:

A) C6H6

B) C6H12

C) C8H18

D) C10H6

Show Answer

Answer:

Correct Answer: A

Solution:

Kb=3.6K,kg/mol.

ΔTf=16.616.14=0.46C

ΔTf=100kfw1m1w2

0.46=100×3.6×1m1×100

m1=360.46=78.26g

C=92.3100×78.26=72.23g

H=7.7×78.26100=6.026g Whole ratio C=72.231=6.02

H=6.0261=6.02 Therefore, the molecular formula is C6H6.
