Werner’s theory of coordination compounds
$CO^{3+}+Cl_3^- \xrightarrow {H_2O}$
$CO^{3+} \leftarrow NH_3$
$nNH_3$
- The compounds of cobalt(III) chloride with ammonia some of the chloride ions could be precipitated as ${AgCl}$ on adding excess silver nitrate solution - others not
- For yellow compd. 1 mol $CoCl_3 \cdot 6NH_3$ gave 3 mol AgCl
- For purple compd. 1 mol $CoCl_3 \cdot 5NH_3$ gave 2 mol AgCl
- For green compd. 1 mol $CoCl_3 \cdot 4NH_3$ gave 1 mol AgCl
- For violet compd. 1 mol $CoCl_3 \cdot 4NH_3$ gave 1 mol AgCl
