<p><strong>1) Primary Cell Culture:</strong> Tissue obtained surgically from an organism is processed into single cells. These cells are then grown in <em>vitro</em> and are called primary cultures. Primary cultures often have a finite replicative capacity.</p>
<p><strong>2) Secondary Cell Culture or Cell Line:</strong> When primary cultures are sub-cultured, they give rise to secondary cell cultures. Secondary cell cultures from normal tissue has a finite/definite replicative capacity and will produce finite cell line. Secondary cell culture from aggressive cancerous tissue may produce a continuous cell line with indefinite replicative capacity.</p>
