Conservative Forces and Potential Energy

Coulomb force between stationary charges is a conservative force, similar to gravitational and spring forces.
Work done by an external force against a conservative force is stored as potential energy.
When the external force is removed, the body moves due to the conservative force, converting potential energy into kinetic energy while conserving the total energy.

Electrostatic potential energy difference between two points is the “work done by an external force in moving a charge from one point to another against the electric force”.
Work done in moving from R to P:

Electrostatic Potential Energy

Potential energy of charge q at a point is the work done by the external force in bringing the charge q from infinity to that point.
Work done between two points:

Then,

$\scriptsize{W_{\infty P} = U_P- U_{\infty} = U_P}$

Points to be remembered regarding Electrostatic Potential Energy

Electrostatic potential energy difference between two points is the work done by an external force in moving a charge from one point to another against the electric force.
This potential energy difference is path-independent and depends only on the initial and final positions, a characteristic of conservative forces.
The actual value of potential energy is not physically significant; only the difference in potential energy is meaningful.

Electrostatic Potential Difference

The electrostatic potential difference between two points is the work done per unit charge in moving the charge from one point to another.
Work done by external force in bringing a unit positive charge from point $\mathrm{R}$ to $\mathrm{P}$

Electrostatic potential

The potential due to a dipole depends not just on $r$ but also on the angle between the position vector $\mathbf{r}$ and the dipole moment vector $\mathbf{p}$ .
The electric dipole potential falls off at large distance as $1/r^2$ , in contrast to the $1/r$ characteristic of the potential due to a single charge.

Equipotential Surfaces (1/2)

An equipotential surface is a surface with a constant value of potential at all points on the surface.
For a single charge $q$ , the potential is given by: $V = \frac{1}{4 \pi \varepsilon_0} \frac{q}{r}$ This shows that $V$ is constant if $r$ is constant, so equipotential surfaces of a single point charge are concentric spherical surfaces centered at the charge.

Equipotential Surfaces (2/2)

The electric field at every point is normal to the equipotential surface passing through that point. This is true for any charge configuration.
If the field were not normal to the equipotential surface, it would have a non-zero component along the surface, which would contradict the definition of an equipotential surface.
