Notes from NEET topper

Levels of DNA Packaging

  1. Nucleosome: The basic unit of DNA packaging in eukaryotes. It consists of DNA wrapped around histone proteins.

  2. Chromatin Fiber: Nucleosomes are further folded into a higher-order structure called chromatin fiber.

  3. Looped Domain (300nm): Chromatin loops attach to a protein scaffold, creating looped domains.

  4. Heterochromatin (700nm): Highly condensed and transcriptionally inactive regions of chromatin.

  5. DNA Compaction: The progressive compaction of DNA through multiple levels of organization.

  6. Formation of Metaphase Chromosome (1400nm): Chromosomes are fully condensed during mitosis and meiosis, facilitating their segregation.
