NEET Solved Paper 2014 Question 13

Question: Which structures perform the function of mitochondria in bacteria? [AIPMT 2014]

Options:

A) Nucleoid

B) Ribosomes

C) Cell wall

D) Mesosomes

Show Answer

Answer:

Correct Answer: D

Solution:

  • Mesosomes perform the function of mitochondria in (including bacteria) prokaryotic cells. They are characteristic specialisation of cell membrane of bacteria that develop due to the ingrowth of plasma membrane. It consist of vesicles tubules and lamellae. They are of two types (i) Septal mesosomes: They help in replication of nucleoid by providing point of attachement. (ii) Lateral mesosomes: It contains respiratory enzymes and are often called chondrioid. Mesosomes are more prominent in from (+)ve bacteria than in Gram (-) ve bacteria.
