Atoms - Result Question 35

37. Which of the following transitions in a hydrogen atom emits the photon of highest frequency?

[2000]

(a) $n=2$ to $n=1$

(b) $n=2$ to $n=6$

(c) $n=6$ to $n=2$

(d) $n=1$ to $n=2$

Show Answer

Answer:

Correct Answer: 37. (a)

Solution:

(a) $\bar{{}v}=R[\frac{1}{n_1^{2}}-\frac{1}{n_2^{2}}]$ or $\frac{1}{\lambda}=R[\frac{1}{n_1^{2}}-\frac{1}{n_2^{2}}]$

Frequency, $v=R c[\frac{1}{n_1^{2}}-\frac{1}{n_2^{2}}]$

Note: See the greatest energy difference and also see that the transition is from higher to lower energy level. Hence, it is highest in case of $n=2$ to $n=1$.
