Thermodynamics and Thermochemistry 1 Question 69

72. A gas mixture of $3.67 \mathrm{~L}$ of ethylene and methane on complete combustion at $25^{\circ} \mathrm{C}$ produces $6.11 \mathrm{~L}$ of $\mathrm{CO}_{2}$. Find out the amount of heat evolved on burning $1 \mathrm{~L}$ of the gas mixture. The heat of combustion of ethylene and methane are -1423 and $-891 \mathrm{~kJ} \mathrm{~mol}^{-1}$ at $25^{\circ} \mathrm{C}$.

Solution:

  1. Let the mixture contain $x$ litre of $\mathrm{CH}_{4}$ and $3.67-x$ litre of ethylene.

$$ \begin{aligned} \mathrm{CH}{4}+\mathrm{O}{2} & \longrightarrow \begin{array}{c} \mathrm{CO}{2} \ x \end{array} \ \mathrm{C}{2} \mathrm{H}{4}+\mathrm{O}{2} \longrightarrow \begin{array}{c} 2 \mathrm{CO}_{2} \
