States of Matter 1 Question 33
33. A bottle of dry ammonia and a bottle of dry hydrogen chloride connected through a long tube are opened simultaneously at both ends the white ammonium chloride ring first formed will be
$(1988,1 \mathrm{M})$
(a) at the centre of the tube
(b) near the hydrogen chloride bottle
(c) near the ammonia bottle
(d) throughout the length of the tube
Show Answer
Solution:
- $\mathrm{HCl}$ will diffuse at slower rate than ammonia because rate of effusion $\propto \frac{1}{\sqrt{M}}$.
Therefore, ammonia will travel more distance than $\mathrm{HCl}$ in the same time interval and the two gas will first meet nearer to $\mathrm{HCl}$ end.
