Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry 2 Question 29

29. Among the following, the number of elements showing only one non-zero oxidation state is $\mathrm{O}, \mathrm{Cl}, \mathrm{F}, \mathrm{N}, \mathrm{P}, \mathrm{Sn}, \mathrm{Tl}, \mathrm{Na}, \mathrm{Ti}$

Show Answer

Solution:

  1. Only $\mathrm{F}$ and $\mathrm{Na}$ show only one non-zero oxidation state.

$$ \begin{aligned} \mathrm{O} & =\mathrm{O}^{-}, \mathrm{O}^{2-}, \mathrm{O}^{2+} \ \mathrm{Cl} & =-1 \text { to }+7 \ \mathrm{~N} & =-3 \text { to }+5 \ \mathrm{P} & =-3 \text { to }+5 \ \mathrm{Sn} & =+2,+4 \ \mathrm{Tl} & =+1,+3 \text { (rare but does exist) } \ \mathrm{Ti} & =+2,+3,+4 \end{aligned} $$
