Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry 2 Question 18
18. The number of moles of $\mathrm{KMnO}_{4}$ that will be needed to react completely with one mole of ferrous oxalate in acidic medium is
(1997)
(a) $\frac{2}{5}$
(b) $\frac{3}{5}$
(c) $\frac{4}{5}$
(d) 1
Show Answer
Solution:
- The balanced redox reaction is :
$3 \mathrm{MnO}{4}^{-}+5 \mathrm{FeC}{2} \mathrm{O}_{4}+24 \mathrm{H}^{+} \longrightarrow 3 \mathrm{Mn}^{2+}+5 \mathrm{Fe}^{3+}$
$\because 5$ moles of $\mathrm{FeC}{2} \mathrm{O}{4}$ require 3 moles of $\mathrm{KMnO}_{4}$
$+10 \mathrm{CO}{2}+12 \mathrm{H}{2} \mathrm{O}$
$\therefore 1$ mole of $\mathrm{FeC}{2} \mathrm{O}{4}$ will require $\frac{3}{5}$ mole of $\mathrm{KMnO}_{4}$.
